Institution Affiliation to the Royal Photographic Society

There are huge benefits for both students and educational institutions in becoming an affiliated member of The RPS.

Membership of The RPS not only offers a place to learn, discuss and progress photography but also provides a supportive environment for those studying, those just starting out, those making the transition from amateur to professional and for those at the top of their game.

The Royal Photographic Society has over 11,000 UK and International members all sharing their experience, skills and passion for photography and image-making.  The RPS also has over 57,000 followers on Facebook alone and an average of 41,000 website visitors per month, which increases this network of like-minded people to over 100,000.

The Society currently offers a student membership rate of £55 per year, however we are aware of the difficult financial situation for both students and institutions and have developed a scheme that will reduce this cost.

On completion of their course the student will also be entitled to remain at the standard student rate for a 2 further years allowing them continued access to the benefits listed in the following document.  This will enable former students to stay in touch with their peers and to remain part of a supportive network of photographers.

In addition to the benefits for students, the RPS is also offering 1 free membership to a nominated member of staff within the institution and thereafter 20% off the normal membership fee for any member of staff who also wishes to join.  As part of the affiliation we would require that the appointed member of staff would be responsible for maintaining contact with the RPS and encourage their students to get involved with all aspects of the Society.

The institution would also have the right to add the RPS coat of arms to their literature and website giving added reassurance to both UK and overseas parents and students who may be considering applying for a photography course.

RPS Journal

The Society's Journal monthly is an invaluable resource packed with news, reviews, articles on contemporary and historical photography as well as information on the latest technologies and trends.  The Journal is also dedicated to reviewing and promoting new and up and coming talent giving students the opportunity to have their work seen by an international audience.

As an affiliated member your institution could also be featured and promoted along with your degree show and students’ work.

All UK and overseas members receive the Journal and are able to download a copy if they wish.

Competitions and Exhibiting Work

This is an opportunity for students to have their work selected by top professionals from the photographic world and seen by a worldwide audience as part of our touring exhibitions, accompanying exhibition catalogues and online galleries.

The RPS Exhibitions include monthly members and annual exhibitions, along with its International Print and the highly acclaimed Science Exhibition.

By entering these exhibitions students not only gain recognition and publicity but also experience and understanding of the importance of exhibiting and entering awards and competitions.

RPS Website

The RPS website offers much more than a place to see great photography. With the wealth and experience of our members there are articles, blogs events and news.

Creating and Promoting Portfolios of Work
Members are able to upload their images to the portfolio section of the RPS website where they can add contact details and their profile.

Each portfolio has the option to allow others to comment on the images.   This is an added benefit to those students who don’t have their own website.

We are currently in discussion with a numbers of companies such as Getty who would be able to give professional advice and guidance on students work.

The students can access the RPS membership forum where they can draw on the extensive experience of other RPS members.

Education Area
This area is dedicated to helping everyone improve their photography with workshops and lectures listings which are discounted for students along with information on bursaries, expert advice and ideas for projects.

Special Interest Group

This is a unique opportunity for students to have access to specialists in many fields of photography as well as a chance to attend events that can broaden their knowledge in areas that they might not usually available to them.

Currently there are 17 groups, which cover every aspect of photography from historical to contemporary.

Students and affiliated institutions will be able to gain access to exclusive discounts enhancements from RPS corporate patrons, that are not available as standard. These are specifically negotiated for students from affiliated institutions.

Free RPS Distinction Exemption

If your students are successful in their study and remain a member of the Society they will be entitled to free exemption for an RPS Distinction.  This is subject to course level, content requirements and students achieving the required grade.
The RPS Distinctions are internationally respected and sought after by professional and amateur photographers and are a mark of excellence.

Regional Groups/ International Chapters

Members are automatically allocated a UK region or a Chapter in over 20 countries according to where they live/study. These groups arrange additional meetings, events, exhibitions and support.

Funding for Projects

The RPS offers a number of bursaries to help students with photographic projects as well asgiving exposure by having their work published in Journals and other multimedia platforms.

It is a condition of affiliation that all students will be registered for all years of their programme of study (normally 3 years for a first degree).

The Programme Manager is entitled to free personal membership of the Society and all full time staff teaching on the programme will benefit from a 20% discount on standard membership rates whilst associated with the programme. Other members of staff will benefit from 20% discount on joining.
