Fellowship of The RPS (FRPS)

Our highest level of Distinction.  Requires a body of work/project of 20/21 images accompanied by a Statement of Intent. Fellowship submissions are open to Associates of the RPS. On this page you will find everything you need to apply for an FRPS.

Fellowship Criteria

  • A submission that demonstrates a distinctive and distinguished body of work.
  • A Statement of Intent that defines the purpose of the work, identifying its aims and objectives.
  • A cohesive body of work that depicts and communicates the aims and objectives set out in the Statement of intent.
  • A body of work that communicates and individual's vision and understanding.
  • The highest level of technical ability using techniques and photographic practices appropriate to the subject.
  • An appropriate and high level of understanding of craft and artistic presentation.

Fellowship Genres and definitions

The genre definitions below are written to give you the widest creative freedom so that you can select the genre in which you are most likely to succeed. Assessments at Fellowship are divided by genre so that they are assessed by the appropriately skilled Assessors of RPS.

  • Applied Photography inc. Documentary: Photography which has been produced for a specific end purpose.
  • Conceptual and Contemporary Photography: Photography that communicates a visual realisation of a stated argument, idea or concept.
  • Documentary Photography: Photography which communicates a clear narrative through visual literacy.
  • Film: The work can be created in any moving image format including film, video, and digital media.
  • Fine Art Photography: Photography which communicates a creative vision.
  • Multimedia: encompasses Audio Visual, Film and Television and interactive multimedia. Multi platform work should be submitted in this category.
  • Natural History Photography: Photography which illustrates an element of the natural world within an unrestricted, uncultivated and untamed environment.
  • Research, Education and Application of Photography: as a general rule, applications will be by way of a written paper.
  • Science photography: includes scientific and medical imaging, medical photography or other related discipline by the submission of a portfolio.
  • Travel Photography: Photography which communicates a sense of place, either UK or Overseas.

  • Applied Photography inc. Documentary: Photography which has a specific end purpose or use. This includes professional photography, portraiture, theatrical, record, architectural, wedding, visual journalism, sport.
  • Conceptual and Contemporary Photography: Photography which explores, defines, illustrates or evaluates issues through photographic images.
  • Film: The work can be created in any moving image format including film, video, and digital media.
  • Fine Art Photography: Photography produced to fulfil the creative vision of the photographer in expressing and sharing perceptions or emotions.
  • Multimedia: encompasses Audio Visual, Film and Television and interactive multimedia. Multi platform work should be submitted in this category.
  • Natural History Photography: Includes all branches of natural history, including zoology and botany.
  • Research, Education and Application of Photography: as a general rule, applications will be by way of a written paper.
  • Science photography: includes scientific and medical imaging, medical photography or other related discipline by the submission of a portfolio.
  • Travel Photography: Photography with no geographical limitations, and should express the feeling of a time and place, and portray a land, its people or culture.
