The RPS Historical Group will visit the Brunel Institute, Bristol, which houses a collection of early and historic photography on Saturday 30 August 2014. Assemble at the Gift Shop adjacent to the Visitor Centre at 10.30am.

Eleni Papavasileiou, Curator of Library & Archive, SS Great Britain Trust will introduce and make available for viewing, the Institute’s collection of David McGregor’s maritime photographs and other SS Great Britain related photographs. (The Library is not open to the public at this time so we have the luxury of a private visit and the opportunity of discussion with the Curator).

12.30pm (approx.) Lunch available at Dockyard Café

After Lunch individuals may visit SS Great Britain (see website for admission charges)

There is no charge for the visit to the Library but BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL to enable us to give firm numbers to the Institute. Bookings close at 4pm on Saturday 16th August 2014. Please book online.

The 80,000 objects, including the world's finest collection of original resource material relating to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, are held in a state-of-the-art secure facility.

The Archive Vault has a carefully controlled environment. Every element is monitored, from the ambient temperature to lighting that only operates when someone enters the archive.

The collections can be used for study and research by maritime historians, Brunel enthusiasts and those interested in the ss Great Britain.

While all ss Great Britain Trust’s stored collections are available for the public to see on demand, visitors are not usually given access to the Archive Vault itself.
