Iconic images through the lens of LEN DANCE FRPS FIoD INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER
Len Dance began his illustrious career in Fleet Street. As he rose from the darkroom to photographer, his reputation and fame spread as he photographed all the royal family, significant world leaders, such as President Kennedy and Margaret Thatcher and many celebrities from the world of entertainment, including Frank Sinatra, The Beatles and Dame Elizabeth Taylor.
After leaving Fleet Street he started his own business and received commissions to over 50 countries. Amongst Len’s claims to fame, are that he was the first western photographer allowed into The Kremlin and communist China. He won BIPP Photographer of The Year twice and the Ilford £1000 print awards four times. To support his international assignments, Len devised a unique lighting system, which led to the nickname Flashdance.
But perhaps the most celebrated of Len’s commissions was his documenting of the construction of the Nat West Tower (at the time, the tallest building in London), where he dangled in a bucket from a crane on the roof at a breathtakingly frightening height of 700 feet.
The London Region is bringing all these ingredients together in Flashdance – a magical evening of photographic entertainment to celebrate Len’s glittering career.
The evening will include:
- An interview with Len, where we’ll be privy to the stories behind the iconic images
- A few film excerpts – one of which will pose an interesting photographic challenge for the audience.
- An exhibition of 20 of Len’s prints.
- The chance to see the entries for Len’s Bleeding London competition – details here.
- The announcement of the competition winner
- The award of the Len Dance Ribbon and prize to the competition winner.
- A glass of wine
Tickets are free, although a voluntary donation towards the costs is suggested. Pre-booking is essential. Doors open at 6.30 for refreshments.
This event is open to both RPS members and non-members.
