In Geoff Nicholson’s novel Bleeding London, jaded tour guide Stuart London sets out to walk every street in the A-Z.

“He knew he had to begin somewhere and he knew that in one sense, any place was as good as another, but he scanned the index of his A-Z looking for a street name that sounded appropriate. His eyes fell on a line that read North Pole Road. Next day he went there and started his walk.” (p.84)

This walk takes in some of the streets that Stuart would have covered in this first walk.

Stuart went by car to the start of his walk but we will be travelling by tube to meet at Ladbroke Grove Station and walk up St Quintin Avenue (where Stuart parked) to North Pole Road. We will then take a circular meander finishing back where we started. Places we’ll see along the way include:

  • North Pole Road
  • Wormwood Scrubs Prison
  • Grand Union Canal
  • Kensal Green Cemetery
  • Trellick Tower
  • Golborne and Portobello Road Markets

At the end of his walk Stuart reckoned that he’d covered “a reasonable ten miles” but, as we will not be walking every street, our walk will be a more manageable five miles and take approximately three hours. We'll finish with a well-deserved drink at the KPH by Ladbroke Grove tube station.

Please check travel arrangements on the day at Transport for London's Journey Planner site.

The walk will be led by Westminster guide and RPS London member, Jen Pedler
