Celebrating British Life Today

There are many interpretations of what Documentary Photography actually is, so the talk will start with a look at some classic documentary images, and how this type photography sits alongside other types of photography such as street, photojournalism, travel etc. Janey will then show a selection of her work looking at various aspects of British Life - from horse racing and pigeon fanciers to the fish auction at Grimsby and the woollen mills of West Yorkshire. She will also explain “the story behind the story”  and her approach to managing  projects.
Over lunch there will be an opportunity to look at some of the magazines that Janey has produced, plus a number of classic books on Documentary Photography.

Biography

Having had a career in IT, Janey was an early convert to digital photography, and bought one of the first digital cameras in 1998. A few years later she sold her business and was able to combine her love of the sea with her growing passion for photography. Experimenting with a number of techniques she strived to produce an “impression” of the landscape, and was awarded her Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2008 with a panel of images taken in East Anglia.
More recently she has become fascinated with documentary photography, and is currently working on a project looking at areas in the UK where a major industry has fallen into decline, and the effect that has had on the community. Janey was invited to join Arena in 2016. She is also a member of the Focus Group, regularly exhibiting in their annual exhibition.
