We are delighted that Elaine Duigenan will lead our next guided visit to the V&A Prints and Drawings study room, and will focus on cameraless photography.

As an exponent of this practice, Elaine is keen to highlight some of the amazing examples in the V&A's collection.  It is a very rich subject area; as Martin Barnes - Senior Curator of Photographs at the V&A - says in his recent book, ‘While related to the conventional practices of photography, cameraless images offer an alternative, experimental, radical and often revelatory form of vision.’ Cameraless Photography (2018)

Elaine’s own photographic practice using digital scanning came to the fore in the 1990’s.  It is a wonderful way to capture detail and depth.  Initially working with hosiery and hairnets to make the Intimate Archaeology series, more recently she has expanded from working with the found object to making her own.

For Blossfeldt’s Apprentice, Elaine makes recreations of Karl Blossfeldt’s plant forms using twisty ties, then scans the object in order to make a fine print.

Elaine Duigenan is a photographic artist based in London. She has exhibited internationally and has work in collections which include the V&A and The Museum of Fine Art in Houston. Her work is represented by Klompching Gallery in New York. As well as making her own series of work for exhibition, she undertakes artist residencies and works alongside institutions such as Wellcome Collection to devise and deliver special projects. In late 2009, one of her images was flown to The International Space Station by Astronaut Leland Melvin on the Shuttle Atlantis.

The event is free but places are limited so booking is essential. Please email me to reserve your place.  Booking will be limited to group members until 31st October.
