1854 and BJP’s new award, Female in Focus is designed to celebrate women photographers and seeks to address the gender imbalance within the photography industry. 80% of photography graduates are female, yet only 15% of professional photographers are women. The competition is inclusive of a multitude of feminine voices, including those who are trans and non-binary.

The judges will select two bodies of work as part of the ‘Stories Category’, and 20 winning images as part of the ‘Single Image Category’. Judges include RPS Hundred Heroine Hannah Starkey.

The two winners from the ‘Stories Category’ will then be exhibited for a month in October/November 2019 at United Photo Industries gallery in New York City, USA, and will be flown out for the exhibition opening. The 20 winning images from the ‘Single Image Category’, will be exhibited alongside the two winning bodies of work.
