Steve McCurry on India

13 December 2015

Region: London

I have been really desperate to go to India for years. Really desperate. My wife wasn’t keen – then came kids and Centerparcs was the holiday destination of choice for a while, then we progressed to Europe but India remains a distant dream. So when I saw Steve McCurry was to give a talk with the Nikon School of Excellence to launch his new book entitled simply “India” I decided I couldn’t pass up the double whammy of a dream destination and a photographic legend in London.

Buying a ticket was easy enough – the RPS website London region had the link straight through to Nikon where I paid my £40 for the event at the Barbican – which also include a signed copy of the book.

McCurry had a self deprecating style and the manner of a master craftsman. He was interviewed by the Editor of Amateur Photographer magazine and explained his passion for India. He answered questions from the audience about his technique and I particularly loved his answer to the question of equipment “I go out with one body and one lens” he said – as if there was no possible alternative. Pure genius. He didn’t even seem to know the focal length of his lenses – pure joy! McCurry is a master of light and composition – I was so engrossed in the book on the way home I almost missed my stop. Maybe one day I’ll make it to India.
