About this image

Culture plates illustrate the rich variety of fungi that are present in the environment. The effects of fungi on humans vary as widely as their diversity of color and texture. The great majority of fungi are completely harmless. Some fungal species can colonize the human body, or produce superficial infections like ringworm or athlete’s foot. Others, however, can cause serious tissue infections in both normal, immunocompetent individuals, and more often in immunocompromised hosts such as those persons receiving chemotherapy, organ transplants or who are HIV positive. A few of these deeper fungal infections can be fatal.
