About this image

Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the shells of various diatoms. Diatoms are a type of photosynthetic, single-celled algae. There are around 100,000 species of diatom, which form an important part of the plankton at the base of the marine and freshwater food chains. The characteristic feature of diatoms is their intricately patterned, glass-like cell wall, or frustule. This image was created in monochrome and later digitally colourised.
