About this image

This image is from a recent body of work called Coastal Retreats. The project involved revisiting and re-photographing very specific locations on the North East coast of England over a period of time. The majority of images that make up this coastal series were taken in and around Newbiggin-by-the-Sea which is an ex-mining and fishing village in Northumberland. This is a location where I often photograph, walking the same route around the headland and over the rocks - which is where this scene of the family unexpectedly presented itself.

I am 46 and live in Gateshead, working as a photographic based artist and lecturer, and as a commercial photographer. I have a First Class Honours Degree in Photography from Northumbria University and an MA in Photography from The University of Sunderland.

I am inspired by the work of British landscape photographer Raymond Moore and the American photographer and writer Robert Adams and I am fascinated by photography's ability to record sometimes very ordinary things and translate them into something extraordinary.
