Extreme Foraging

About this image

There had been heavy snowfall on the top of the Lammermuir Hills, in the Scottish Borders, and the red grouse were forced down to lower ground to try and find food. Even on the lower ground the snow was still deep and the only food available was on the older, taller heather plants. I watched the grouse walk from plant to plant looking for any seeds it could find; it looked so elegant as it reached up to take seeds from the plant.
