About this image

My colleague, Robin Hofe, designs and builds biomimetic robots. His desk is home to a bizarre collection of objects, many of which are artistic works produced as by-products of his experiments. This plasticine model of Robin's face was used to cast a latex mask for a talking robot called AnTon. The photograph is an ambrotype (positive image on blackened glass plate) made directly in camera by the wet collodion process. (MPP 5x4 camera with Zeiss Jena 180mm lens, 50 seconds at f/4)
