About this image

Soma Nomaoi is an annual celebration of Samurai culture in Fukushima, which is more than 1000 years old. Approximately 2000 people died in Fukushima from the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011, 80% of whom were from the area where the Soma Nomaoi is held. Although the stereotypical image of modern Japan might be of a high-tech economy, the country remains a hidden world to many outside.

Through my portraits, I am exploring this secret part of Japan: the mentality, inner warmth and profound sense of beauty triumphing over adversity.
