About this image

Digital scan of a microscope slide showing the intricate detail in the head of a small Tortoiseshell Butterfly (Aglais urticae). Also known by its older names Vanessa urticae or Nymphalis urticae, this is an abundant species in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The specimen was prepared and mounted by W Watson & Sons, a famous supplier of microscope slides, in the 19th Century. The slide was scanned in a 35mm film scanner, the resulting digital file was cleaned and balanced before conversion to monochrome and inverted to form this digital ‘negative’.
