About this image

Undarmaa is a grandmother living in Murun town. I found her in one of the beauty salons in the main market – one of the largest in Mongolia, selling everything from cows’ heads and rolls of linoleum to winter blankets and motorbike parts. She was initially a little unsure of herself in front of the camera, so I asked her, through my translator, to look down the barrel of the lens and express, in her pose, how she felt to be Mongolian – this is the resulting shot.
