About this image

This is a general term for a group of conditions that involve an abnormal increase in the number of immune cells called histiocytes. Commonly thought of as a form of cancer, current research is now looking towards the condition being an autoimmune disease where the histiocytes attack the body rather than the infection, the resulting additional immune cells then form tumours in various parts of the body.
