About this image

Byankhuu is a railway station controller in Emeelt village, three stops west on the line in and out of the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar. She is photographed in the waiting room, a perfectly preserved 1970s communist relic. The austere surroundings and her uniform gave her a touch of the James Bond villain. The station was silent and empty except for 3 old men outside on the platform, drunk on airag (fermented mare’s milk) carrying jerry cans full of gasoline and a sack full of cabbages.
