About this image

This photograph was taken in Qikou town, Shanxi Province, China. The artist follows a long tradition of painting with oils. For thousands of years the Yellow River has been revered as the birthplace of ancient Chinese culture and the cradle of Chinese civilisation although today, the pressures of rapid industrialisation and population growth have taken their toll, and the Yellow River is now one of the most polluted in the world.
