About this image

Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM): Human Crab Louse, Pthirus pubis; these insects are flightless and spend their entire life cycle on human pubic, beard or eyebrow hair. The females lay their eggs in clothing seams and on fibers. The lice carry no known disease but cause itching which can induce infected scratches made by the host. They spread between individuals during sex and by the use of shared towels, clothing and beds.
