John Cooke ARPS
00 Plan For ARPS
The Abandoned Asylum. This series of photographs were taken at the Old Talgarth Asylum, South Wales. The Asylum opened in 1901 with the capability to house 352 patients and closed in 2000 due to reform in hospital needs of this type. My intentions at first were to produce a photographic record of the building for posterity, before it became a total ruin or was demolished never to be seen again. However, I quickly realised that the images were becoming much more to me than an architectural record of the building, more a visual memorial to past occupants, their anger, sorrow and despair. Walking around the rooms I felt the resonance of the past all around me. I have dedicated my images to the troubled souls who found themselves within these walls. Nothing within these images has been arranged or staged for the taking of the photographs; everything is as I found it, the only thing that changed was myself.
