Practical Book Making with Alex Hare

This workshop is a one day course delivered by video conferencing app Zoom.

This photo book making workshop will help you learn the wonderful craft of book making for displaying your photographs in a beautiful, hard covered concertina style book.

The workshop is run by pro landscape photographer Alex Hare and it is designed to kit you out with all the things you need and to help you make your first photo book.

This is an online course and delivery of the workshop is planned accordingly.

Both lunch and short breaks are built into the timings for the day.

Once you enlist, a fully illustrated kit list with links and advice on where to buy items from is available to you.  The Kit List also includes exclusive discounts set up by Alex for RPS bookmakers on this workshop. Once your kit arrives you will have all the tools and materials necessary to set up your desk and start your course.

You will also receive access to an introductory video ahead of your workshop introducing you to Alex and the first steps in book making.

On the day of the course, we will cover all the various types of books suitable for photographers, how to make your first book and a tutorial on the art of sequencing. Sequencing is the way in which you choose and order your work to create a coherent set of images for your book and Alex will discuss various methods for doing this with you.

You will also receive free access to Alex’s complete video tutorial on book making.  This video is your companion to the workshop and demonstrates the whole process and all the techniques so you can refer back to it at any stage you need to, both during and after the workshop.

Requirements:

12 Essential Kit Items

To take part in this workshop, participants will need:

• a computer with webcam and microphone
• Zoom installed and (preferably) some basic experience with using it to join a meeting.
• a reasonable internet connection 
• equipment and materials for making a book - see above (circa £80), more fully set out in the Kit List.

You will be asked to supply a set of 6-8 images in advance of the workshop that you wish to use in your book in order to take part in the sequencing session. This is a very constructive  session with your group and forms a key part of the workshop.

You don’t’ need your photographs printed in order to make the book-you can always print and add them in later on. However, if you want to print your photographs then you will also need:

• functioning photo printer 
• photo paper

Some of the materials and items needed are commonly found in many homes and people who mount their own prints or do basic DIY are likely already to have some of the necessary equipment.

Alex Hare is a pro landscape photographer and author of forthcoming title ‘Photographing Kent’. He’s taught photography to enthusiasts on his Tripod Travels tours with Lizzie Shepherd and at his local University.
