Running Your Own Photographic Business

This is a two day workshop with Ria Mishaal FRPS and guest speaker Danielle Garber.

This course has been designed to help those wishing to embark on photography as a business; it will not cover any aspects of image making but it will give an understanding of what is involved in running a successful business. Delegates need have no previous business experience to attend the course.

It will focus on the framework required to create a successful and sustainable business from the start, and will cover:

 

  • Developing the basis of your business: what are you selling and to whom?
  • Defining your ideal client
  • Roles in business: from being a visionary to being a manager
  • Building systems for an efficient business
  • Software and workflows
  • Considerations for legal documents, insurances, GDPR
  • How to price your work
  • The concept of selling and how to sell
  • Bookkeeping 
  • Building a reputation
  • Achieving success: what success means, setting goals and how to achieve them
  • Building self confidence as a creative

This course also includes practical and actionable steps that you can take to get more clients now. We will go through the fundamentals of marketing and branding and show you how you can leverage both online and offline marketing to grow your business and get fully booked:

About your tutors:

RIA MISHAAL FRPS                       

Over the last 12 years, Ria Mishaal has built a six-figure photography business shooting weddings, portraits and high-end commercial photography, and was awarded the prestigious distinction as a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society in 2018.

Ria is passionate about crafting authentic and artistic imagery. She’s a photographer, who taught herself how to master her camera and editing to produce consistently beautiful imagery in a distinctive style.

Ria uses her 12 years of professional photography and her 15 years of teaching experience, to help her students learn the fundamentals of photography, visual style, branding and business so they can harness the power of creative photography and work with more of their ideal clients.

 

DANIELLE GARBER     

Danielle Garber, founder of Be More You Online, is a brand & marketing expert who blends her 16 years experience of working with the likes of Apple, Amazon, and leading UK and global brands with her experience of small business as a marketing team of one!

Danielle encourages businesses to use their individual style, talents and skills to create unique and deeply authentic brands that stand out in the crowded online space. 

She also offers deeply practical and actionable advice, using proven techniques to help passionate business owners to supercharge their impact, income and reach.

Please Bring: A notepad and pen. We provide tea and coffee, but we do not provide lunch, so you may wish to bring sandwiches with you. There are places to go within walking distance to buy lunch.

Bristol Temple Meads is a 30-minute walk to Paintworks.

Buses running from Bristol Temple Meads to Paintworks are: 1, 178, 349 or the X39, but please check before leaving.

Local Parking

If you need to bring your car and don’t want to use the Park and Ride Buses, you can book a place to park at a nearby supermarket using this link yourparkingspace.co.uk

You can also park all-day for £5 at Arnos Manor.  Visitors will need to go to the hotel reception to purchase a ticket to display on their windscreen.

Venue Information

All areas are fully accessible with a lift, ramps and restrooms on each floor. If you have any specific requirements, please contact us on RPSHouse@rps.org so we can assist you during your visit.

There is public parking in Paintworks. We also have reserved parking spaces we can make available for those with accessibility requirements. Please contact us in advance if you would like to reserve a space. From ground level there are lifts to reach RPS House on the raised ground floor.

Cancellation policy

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.

If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
