NEW - This workshop will introduce you to the principle of lighting using speedlights for both indoor and outdoor portraiture. You’ll learn to not only use speedlights, but how to see, understand and manipulate light. Limited to 6 people.

This workshop is ideal if you’d like to develop your photography beyond natural lighting. You’ll learn the principles and how to use and modify speedlights to create beautiful light. You’ll learn how to create various light setups and how to see and understand the light.

We will be working in pairs and photographing each other, you will learn:

  • How to use speedlights off camera in manual mode
  • How to use Canon speedlights off camera using TTL
  • Introduction to a range of modifiers to shape your light
  • How to engineer out ambient light
  • How to create various lighting setups
  • How to encompass ambient light and use speedlights outdoors

Why will this make me a better photographer? It’s a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself into the world of speedlight photography with one of the UK’s leading photographers. You’ll learn to not only use speedlights, but how to see, understand and manipulate light.

What to Bring:  

Your own camera, notepad and pen.

Although we have plenty of speedlights, you’re welcome to bring any you have.

Have a basic understanding of your camera, be able to change shutter speed, ISO and aperture in manual mode.  

Lunch is included - please let us know if you have any special dietary needs. 

About the tutor:

David Newton is a Canon Geek and Ambassador for for some of the biggest camera brands in the world including Sandisk, Manfrotto, Lastolite, LitePanels and Koy Lab. He teaches extensively for Canon across the UK and Ireland at shows, camera dealers and events. He also runs a variety of 1-2-1 and small groups courses on all aspects of photography and he hosts trips on safari in the Masai Mara and whale watching in Mexico. If you’re a photographer, at any level, he can almost certainly help you. And if you’re a Canon user, there’s probably nobody better.

Doors open at 9:30am and we kick off at 10am to 5pm.

Cancellation policy

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.

If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
