Photography Ethics Symposia

Event info

In 2019, we hosted the first annual Photography Ethics Symposium on the theme 'Working with People'. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have moved the event online. Instead of one all-day event, we are hosting a mini-series of three panel discussions.

The aim of these panel sessions is to promote conversation and critical thought about ethics in photography. With this series, we aim to highlight issues which, we feel, are particularly relevant in today’s context. We will touch on the ethics of consent and power, representation and authority, and the subjectivity of photography.

The Photography Ethics Symposia will take place on the first Thursdays of October, November, and December at 1400 BST/GMT. The themes and panelists of the Photography Ethics Symposia will be as follows:

October 1: On gender, power, and documenting vulnerability (book right)

Panelists: Polly Braden and Smita Sharma

November 5: On representation, identity, and intersectional storytelling (click to book)

Panelists: Melissa Bunni Elian and TBC

December 3: On objectivity, truth, and lies (click to book)

Panelists: John Edwin Mason and Jennie Ricketts

Attendees are invited to submit their questions to the panelists in advance by emailing using the link here. There will also be an opportunity to submit questions to panelists during the sessions.

These sessions will not be recorded.

A Zoom link will be provide 4 days in advance of each event.

Each session will be moderated by Savannah Dodd, founder and director of the Photography Ethics Centre. The symposium is hosted by the Royal Photographic Society, and organised by the Photography Ethics Centre.

These events require a minimum number of participants. In the event that this is not reached attendees will be advised and refund.
