RPS Distinctions are now offering one-to-one statement of intent reviews via Zoom. This means you can have a private, individual session with a panel member, who will be able to discuss with you the best way forward. This new service is open to both members and non-members alike and covers all Associate and Fellowship genres. Your computer screen and that of the panel member will be linked via the Zoom app, which is free and easy to download. The panel member will be able to see and discuss your statement of intent and have a conversation with you as the session progresses in a friendly and professional atmosphere via screen sharing.
A 1:1 is ideal for anyone who is about to write a statement of intent and would like some preliminary advice or nearly ready to apply and would like a panel members opinion.
What are Distinctions?
Applying for our Distinctions takes you on a personal journey, exploring not just “technical competence” but how you want to develop as a photographer, how others react to your work, and what we want to say as a photographer. Therefore, we ask for a body of work that shows not just the content of the images but also the intent of the photographer. Essentially, photography has a purpose, and that is to explain, challenge, inspire and tell stories. Our distinctions make us better photographers in that sense, telling our own stories.
What happens after I book?
Once you've booked using the link above, your details will be forwarded to one of our panel members for the appropriate distinction/genre. The panel member will make contact with you via email to arrange a date and time for the meeting that suits both of you. The panel member will need your statement of intent at least 10 days before the zoom meeting.
Which panel members will give advice?
A current panel member from the relevant panel will be allocated to you. Please see links below for a list of all our current panel members.
How long does the advice last?
The sessions last for 40 minutes. This may be extended but this will be down to the individual panel member. You will also receive a brief summary via email of the advice given if appropriate.
How many words am I allowed?
The maximum for all genres is 150 words, except Contemporary which is 300. The title of the statement is not included in the word count.
Can I submit some images with the statement of intent?
Yes you can, we ask for no more than 6, and please ensure images are no larger than 4096 pixels (landscape) x 2400 pixels (portrait). Images must be named with two digits only, for example: 01, 02, 03, etc
Before you book your zoom 1:1
We would encourage you to read the Guidelines which can be found at
How many times can I book a 1:1?
You can have a maximum of two 1:1 statement on intent reviews on the same project.
Thank you and the best of luck
Please note: All RPS panel members are volunteers, and we must respect their privacy. Once your 1:1 has concluded do not contact panel members directly under any circumstances. This also helps protect your submission from any suggestion of undue influence. Any correspondence must be sent directly to the Distinctions department (firstname.lastname@example.org) who will contact the panel member on your behalf. Failing to comply could result in your 1:1 being withdrawn.
