Approaching Photography - Express Yourself - Paul Hill MBE

Event info

(Live workshop using Zoom)

Based on his classic book Approaching Photography, Paul will tackle how photography can be used to say something rather than to show something.

His book shows how photographers have approached a diverse range of situations and ideas in order to express something. Paul will use the book's illustrations, provided by some of the world's top photographers, to demonstrate that our unique personalities can be in the pictures we make.

An understanding of how you can reflect thoughts and ideas in photographs will help you to extend your visual experience and create an individual look to your photography.

What you will do
After an introductory presentation - What is Self-Expression? - you will be given short practical exercises followed by feedback and discussion that are aimed to develop your photographic seeing and thinking in new ways.

There will be 8 - 10 participants, so this is a shared experience. It will run from 10.00 to 17.00 (BST) and participants will have to email low res images to Paul for feedback and group discussion.

 What you will need

  • A camera - anything from a smartphone upwards is fine. Remember that a camera is just a tool, the important thing is that you are comfortable using it.
  • Something to edit your images on - e.g desktop computer, laptop, ipad etc.
  • A reasonable WiFi connection is necessary. Zoom should be downloaded and installed onto your computer that has a webcam and microphone.
