Introduction to your Digital Camera - John Roe - Cancelled

Limited to 8 places.

For those with a digital SLR camera who wish to learn about F-stops, shutter speeds, ISO settings, composition and creative picture taking.

Please note that this course is specifically designed for Digital SLR cameras, however should you wish to use a compact digital camera then please contact learning@rps.org

What the day will cover

Experiment with and investigate the functions of your digital camera with help from a professional tutor. Here you will gain experience and understanding of  F-stops, shutter speeds, ISO settings, digital image types, metering modes, depth of field and basic composition.

Out and About

Transfer your developed understanding into hands-on practice as you go out and about in Bristol photographing with your tutor.

Back at RPS House

Images will be reviewed and discussed in an informal setting within the group and the tutor will give helpful feedback and advice. The number seen will depend on the time available.

What to bring

Digital camera, your camera manual, USB lead or USB card reader and a CD-R or a flash drive for your notes. Please empty your cameras memory card before attending the course.

Bring a packed lunch or use local facilities. Drinks provided. You will need to have appropriate clothing for walking and weather conditions.

The Tutor

John Roe has been a part-time teacher for the Royal Photographic Society for several years and has led many successful courses. He has a keen understanding of various digital media and emerging technologies and enjoys sharing his knowledge to provide course participants with practical advice in a focussed but supportive manner.

Following graduation from the University of South Wales, UK, with a degree and a postgraduate diploma in Documentary Photography, John started working as a freelance photographer for clients including the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Big Issue. John also has an Associate distinction from the Royal Photographic Society.

He is a founding member and company director of several successful Bristol based companies that work across film production, design and software development, including Omni Creative. His key strengths lay in design layout, photography, management and the development of brand and marketing solutions.

As a senior creative and project manager he has managed creative teams to deliver projects for national and regional well-known brands including, Nest, npower, Innovate UK, The Welsh Assembly, the Home Office, the Royal Photographic Society, the University of Bath, the Association of British Insurers, Maritime UK and Tech Partnership.

Venue Information

All areas are fully accessible with a lift, ramps and restrooms on each floor. If you have any specific requirements, please contact us on RPSHouse@rps.org so we can assist you during your visit.

There is public parking in Paintworks. We also have reserved parking spaces we can make available for those with accessibility requirements. Please contact us in advance if you would like to reserve a space. From ground level there are lifts to reach RPS House on the raised ground floor.

Cancellation policy

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.

If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
