Limited to 10 participants.

This popular course provides an introduction to Lightroom’s organisational and creative editing tools and is suitable for a beginner. The course is based on Lightroom Classic software for both Mac and Windows PC users. 

The workshop is run using Zoom video conferencing software and you will be able to watch and interact with your tutor during each topic presentation and ask questions throughout the day. All presentations and notes are provided to you before the event starts, together with tips on how to prepare for the course and use Zoom, if you’ve never used it before.

In addition to the presentations, you will be set short practical tasks using your own images. We encourage you to share questions and work in progress images with other delegates, although this is entirely optional.

Welcome and outline of the day

Topic 1: How Lightroom is different: Overview of the application, how it simplifies your workflow and the importance of the Catalogue file.

Topic 2: Essential housekeeping: Advice on data storage, naming files, importing and managing your growing archive.

Task: Creating a catalogue and importing images.

Topic 3: Labelling and retrieving your images: Viewing, tagging, filtering and organising images. The differences between folders and collections.

Task: Explore labelling and organising groups of images.

13.00 Lunch break

Topic 4: Basic editing in the Develop module: Colour, exposure and tone control using a variety of panel tools.

Task: Explore basic editing tools.

Topic 5: Hand-editing techniques: Using the Selection Brush and other ‘selective’ tools, to create Lightroom-style masks.

Task: Make creative edits on your images

The Tutor: Dr Tim Daly is Senior Lecturer in Photography at Chester University.

His specialist subjects are photography production and artist's publishing. Tim teaches on all levels of the BA Photography programme with special responsibility for practice based modules, and also contributes to the MA Fine Art programme. Tim has had many photography books published, and has been teaching RPS workshops for a number of years.

Please inform us as soon as possible if you are unable to attend a course as it is not possible to refund any cancellation or transfer to another workshop less than 14 days prior to course start date. The Society reserves the right to cancel a workshop 7 days prior to its start date - please check your hotel and travel cancellation policy as this may be affected.

If you are attending one of our workshops that involves a trip out, please ensure you bring all weather clothing and protection for your camera. Persons under the age of 16 are welcome to attend events but, to conform with UK law, must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or responsible adult.
