How to Shoot Historic Buildings - A Country House & Garden with Martine Hamilton Knight

Top architectural photographer, Martine Hamilton Knight DLitt(hon) is looking forward to welcoming you to the beautiful Tudor home of the Brackenbury family; Holme Pierrepont Hall, Nottingham.

The Pierreponts came over with William I in 1066 and settled in Nottinghamshire. The current house was built by Sir William Pierrepont in 1536 in open countryside on the south of the city near the River Trent, and was occupied by them until the mid twentieth century. Home to the Brackenburys ever since, the house and beautiful gardens are host to us at a time of year when seasonal flora and fauna displays complement our interior photography to create a stunning set of images for photographers.

The old house with its exposed brick walls in the Tudor lodgings, open fireplace, grand Charles I staircase and long gallery contrast with the Victorian period living rooms and bedroom décor. The gardens extend to 30 acres including the historic courtyard garden with its 1875 parterre, the formal gardens with topiary and in surrounding pastureland, Jacobean sheep graze.

Composition and lighting will be discussed and explored, together with exposure, and wide angle vs telephoto lens choice. We will use be using artificial light and fill-flash to control contrast and add mood/drama to your interiors, with guidance throughout. Your day will also include a classroom based presentation.

Holme Pierrepont Hall is to the east of West Bridgford, just off the A52 very near to the National Watersports Centre. Follow directions to the Watersports centre, but stay on the road for another mile. It becomes unpaved, rutted and rural. Watch for the speed bumps, and turn into the driveway on the left hand side, come down and park in front of the church. Make your way through the main door to the courtyard, turn right into the house again and Martine will greet you in our base room just past the staircase on the ground floor.

Course Structure: Please arrive at 9.45am for a 10am start and the course finishes at around 4.30pm with approx a 1/2 hour break for lunch.

Please Bring: Camera, all Lenses, spare Batteries & spare memory cards plus a Tripod - (if you have one), if not we have plenty to borrow. A notebook & pen. Please remember to bring your camera instruction book if you still have it.

Tea & coffee is provided, but you will need to bring a packed lunch as the hall’s rural location limits the options for take away food.

Additional Notes: Our day includes working indoors and out, so please dress for the weather and season with comfortable footwear. This private house is a Grade 2* listed property and wheelchair access is not possible, so please ask our advice us if you have mobility issues. There are quite a few uneven floors, raised thresholds and staircases in the house.

The tutor will need contact details in case she needs to send important information. We will presume that by booking this course you are giving permission unless you contact us to state otherwise.
