Project Photography and Story Telling with Alex Hare

This workshop with pro photographer Alex Hare is aimed at developing your photographic interests in terms of producing a body of work on a theme, idea or subject of your choice. It is delivered in three sessions by video conferencing app Zoom.

You will be fully supported through three contact sessions to learn about the concepts behind a photo project, see examples by some leading practitioners and take part in group discussions as you each identify and work toward a project of your choice.

Alex has the rare combination of both an academic and practicing photographic background so he is well placed to offer this Project Photography mini course/workshop. His course embraces various genres and styles and will engage you in whichever area, topic, subject or idea you are interested in exploring and producing a project, from concept to completion.

Alex’s format for this workshop includes how to:

1         identify and undertake a project

2         see how leading practitioners undertake projects

3         work to a plan to explore various ideas and personal interests

4         discover what it takes to complete a project

5         consider how we might display the work afterwards.

In the first session, Alex will encourage you to think beyond making a single image and towards a sequence that adequately coves the project in question. We’ll look at examples of projects and the stories within them and think about what might be of interest to us.

Alex will demonstrate how a project can provide a fun and useful focus to our work and offer another level of meaning as it provides the viewer with broader insight into the topics we cover through our photography.

Alex will also demonstrate options for combining images and text together to support the overall narrative of our project together with the software (including Photoshop) that we can use to achieve this.

This will be a three part activity.

Part one being an online talk by Alex.

Part two will be an open seminar session for 1-2 hours where we discuss your ideas for your projects and run through the next steps to help move the project along.

Part three is the conclusion where the participant can present their project (or work to date) to the group and discuss their work with the group.

Participants will have a short 5-10 minute comfort break around halfway through each session.

You will be able to watch and interact with your tutor during each presentation and ask questions.

Alex Hare is a pro landscape photographer and author of forthcoming title ‘Photographing Kent’. He’s taught photography to enthusiasts on his Tripod Travels tours with Lizzie Shepherd and at his local University.
