Smartphone photography (the missing manual) with Nigel Goldsmith.

A Virtual Workshop of three sessions.

Modern smartphones are highly capable photographic tools which, when used with care and under optimum conditions can deliver high quality images. In this practical workshop participants will learn how to take control of their smartphone to produce good quality images of a variety of subjects. The course also includes editing smartphone images using free or cheap apps. The course is aimed at both iPhone and Android users. No prior experience of photography with a phone or camera is required to do this course.

Session 1

Preparation, focus control, exposure control and compensation, supports, shutter release, Portraits and computational photography

Padlet overview for sharing work.

Session 2

Panoramics, Live Picture (ios) Capture formats, accessories

Session 3

Editing images with TouchRetouch, editing images with Snapseed. Sharing images on group Padlet for review.

Participants will have a short 5-10 minute comfort break around halfway through the session.

Equipment:

Smartphone, either Android or Iphone.

Apps used by participants during the course; Snapseed (free), TouchRetouch (approx. £1.99).

Apps demonstrated though not required by students, TinType, Moment (ios only)

All about Nigel

Nigel is a photographic and video artist having shown his work in numerous galleries and film festivals in the UK and abroad. He has a BA in photographic art and an MA in fine art. He has also worked as a commercial photographer since the 1980s. In his creative practice, Nigel often explores techniques and equipment largely forgotten by mainstream photography. He is currently working with large-format digital scanning camera backs (5x4) from the early 1990s making connections with early analogue processes such as pinhole photography.
