Renowned for her flower portrait photography and for advocating Lensbaby photography, in this talk Polina Plotnikova FRPS introduces another facet of her work. Small World is a talk featuring artist ball-jointed doll photography – these high-end collectable objects are created by remarkable craftsmen and are a real work of art in themselves. They are perfect models to work with as they can be any character you want them to be, play any role. Polina covers a bit of history of ball-jointed dolls and discusses various aspects of photographing dolls, including adjusting the scale of lighting, sourcing props, etc.
Polina says: ‘They say that a photographer is either picture taker or a picture maker; I am firmly in the picture makers' club. While fully appreciating the "what you see is what you get" approach, I am much more interested in chasing an ever-elusive image that appears in my mind's eye, an image that conveys my feelings and emotions, rather than remains a mere statement of fact. After studying Art History in university, I worked in various museums and galleries. These days I teach my favourite photographic subjects: flower portraiture, still life, and in my own time enjoy photographing impressionistic landscapes, and collectable artist ball-jointed dolls.’
