This meeting is in 2 parts: in the first half Dr Preston will speak to us about research & execution strategies (see below) and in the second half there will be an opportunity for up to 3 members to offer one of their ongoing projects for discussion and feedback from fellow members and the speaker.
Rivers, Trees, Journeys - Yan Wang Preston
Dr Yan Wang Preston, will discuss research and execution strategies for long-term photographic projects. She will use two of her own projects as case studies: for Mother River (2011-2014), she photographed the entire 6,211km Yangtze River in China at precise 100km intervals. For Forest (2010-2017), she followed the adaptation journeys of transplanted old trees in new Chinese cities. Both projects have won major awards, shown internationally and published extensively. Dr Preston will focus on a holistic research approach termed as Deep Mapping, in which contextual and historical research, technical experiments and a bodily intervention within the landscape all contribute to generate new artistic insights.
Dr Yan Wang Preston is a British-Chinese artist interested in landscape, ecology and identity. Her long-term projects, Mother River and Forest, won major awards including the 1st Prize, Professional Landscape, Sony World Photography Awards 2019. Both projects are published by Hatje Cantz in 2018. She holds a PhD in Photography from the University of Plymouth and lectures at the University of Huddersfield, UK.
