Engagement Talk - Carolyn Mendelsohn

Event info

This Engagement Talk features Carolyn Mendelsohn.

Carolyn Mendelsohn explores and shares her photography journey taking us from portraits and long form projects that tell stories, through to the pandemic that led her to creating Through Our Lens – a project set up initially to enable young people to tell their own story through photography, when their voices were missing from the narrative. Through Our Lens uses photography and creativity as a tool. It engages with and enables people to tell and share their stories, their lived experiences, and their truth in the most creative and compelling way. In this talk Carolyn will be sharing her process, and insights gained on the way.
Carolyn Mendelsohn is a photographer, and filmmaker. Her passion is her personal work; photographic and film work on a large scale, based on the lives of individuals and their stories. She also works on portrait commissions and commercial briefs. Alongside this, Carolyn has expertise in leading creative participation projects. Enabling people to reach their creative potential she strongly believes that everyone is capable of moments of brilliance given the right framework and support.

Her art and photographic work has won major international art prizes and awards and has been exhibited internationally. Carolyn has received awards including the 2020 Julia Margaret Cameron winning award for Portrait Series, winner of single image at Open Walls Arles British Journal of Photography, winning BJP, Portrait of Britain and winning The Royal Photographic Society International Print exhibitions RPS IPE 159 gold, as well as being in the final in for RPS IPE 160. In 2018 she was shortlisted for the International Women Photographers Award and nominated for the RPS 100 Heroines. She has been published by The Guardian, The Sunday Times, BBC, La Monde, Huff post, Buzzfeed, and British Journal of Photography amongst others.  Carolyn’s portrait series Being Inbetween is in a major touring exhibition at Impressions Gallery, Bradford, and is available as a book published by Bluecoat Press.
