This new approach to traditional location-based landscape workshops offers you creative, technical and location planning support from an experienced workshop leader, whilst enabling you to comply with social distancing requirements.
Discovering and capturing Dorset’s Jurassic coast offers an in-depth insight into some of the most dramatic and exciting photographic locations along Dorset’s unique coastline. The workshop explores the potential of long-exposure techniques, as well as the potential of both colour and black and white fine art techniques to help you capture the unique features of this stunning geological rich coastline.
Workshop leader David Rosen has considerable experience of shooting the Dorset coast and specialises in long-exposure and fine art images in both black and white and colour. David makes extensive use of previsualisation techniques and encourages photographers to develop envisioning journals in order to elevate the quality of your fine art and long-exposure portfolios. David will share these approaches and techniques within the context of capturing the Jurassic Coast landscape.
The workshop is split into three sections with an optional one-to-one session available for those wanting to explore and develop their images further.
Part 1: Detailed Group Online Briefing Workshop Session
In the first group session, David will provide a comprehensive overview of the area, map out the photographic opportunities, show numerous image examples and encourage attendees to carry out their own creative previsualisation research. Key aspects of the workshop will include:
- Creative overview of each location
- Long-exposure monochrome and fine art image capture opportunities for each location
- Practical guidance and pre-planning for each location
- Guidance on creating of a previsualisation notebook for the shoot
Part 2: Individual Tour of the Jurassic Coast
David’s tour is designed to help you capture the dramatic geology of the Jurassic Coast. The itinerary includes both well-known locations such as Lulworth Cove and Swanage Pier, as well as a number of lesser-known locations. David will provide specific advice and guidance but will also encourage individuals to develop their own creative approaches. As a workshop member, you will be encouraged to experiment and explore the locations using long exposure, black & white and low and high key fine art image capture approaches. You will also be encouraged to select a number of images from your time at the locations to share within the subsequent group discussion.
Part 3: The final session will take place approximately four weeks after the initial briefing, giving you plenty of time to plan and execute your trip and develop your chosen images. Each member of the group will be encouraged to present their shortlist of images with individuals and given the opportunity to explain their creative choices, post-production journey and challenges they experienced in achieving their desired results. In the discussions, the group will be encouraged to provide structured objective feedback, with David as workshop leader moderating the discussions and providing individual guidance and critique.
Finally, as a further option, individuals attending the workshop will have the opportunity of purchasing an additional 30 minute individual session with David where he will work on your images with you, helping you overcome technical difficulties and refine your final creative output.
A choice of locations
Part of the aesthetic beauty of Dorset’s Jurassic coastline is its dramatic geology. Some of the sites can be more challenging than others with regards access to the location. David has graded each of the included locations allowing you to structure your trip according to your preferences and access capabilities. Locations will vary from those with nearby parking and minimal walking to reach the location, to those involving longer walks to the location, stairs, steep paths and or scrambling over uneven rocky ground. For each location these will be clearly described as well as the availability of facilities and cafes.
In planning your trip, you should expect to bring/wear
1) Camera, tripod, filters and required accessories
2) Both wellies and strong walking shoes
3) Warm and waterproof clothing
4) Snacks and water
This will be a category C event for up to 6 people. Category C means events that focus on a particular skill or technique (such as long exposures, composition or night photography) and/or on getting the best from a particular location. The event leader will have good location knowledge to ensure that the best is made of the prevailing conditions and will be a skilled landscape photographer able to offer tuition at all levels. These events are usually led by professionals but sometimes by volunteer members of the landscape group.
To take part in the online meetings you will need:
• a computer with webcam and microphone
• a reasonable internet connection
• to download and install the Zoom application on your computer. You will not need a Zoom subscription.
A link to join the Zoom meeting will be emailed to you a day or two in advance of your appointment.
Please note: your personal data (name, email address and telephone number) that you supply when booking an event will be passed to the event / workshop leader in order to enable them to:
- contact you in advance of the event to remind you or notify you of joining instructions (or changes thereto) etc.
- contact you at short notice before or during an event in case of any emergency or last-minute changes (eg because of weather).
By booking this event you are deemed to consent to this transfer of your data.

Cancellation by You
If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.
If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.
Cancellation by us
Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.
Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.
If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.
Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
