Long exposures have become increasingly popular in landscape photography over recent years since the introduction of extreme ND filters, such as the Big and Little Stopper, which allow for extended exposure times. With a little creativity, long exposures can change the way we look at moving objects and capture a real sense of time passing. The results can be highly effective, allowing the photographer to create some truly compelling images.
The stretch of coastline from Clevedon to Burnham-on-Sea, provides for the perfect location for long exposure photography. Clevedon's graceful Victorian pier, the magnificent long pier and vast stretch of beach at Weston-Super-Mare, and the striking Grade 11 Lower lighthouse at Burnham-on-Sea are our principle subject matter for this workshop, offering plenty of opportunities to make some wonderfully moody captures.
Our workshop has been timed, as best as possible, to take advantage of the tidal conditions of this area - the Bristol Channel being home to the second highest tidal reach in the world. We will photograph throughout the day stopping to for lunch before recommencing as the tide retreats, leaving behind wet sand and reflections of the pier, to capture sunset at Weston-Super-Mare.
You will learn how to perfect the technique of long exposures, making use of extreme neutral density filters to capture movement and effectively slow down the passage of time. Your tutor; Andy Page, will take you through the many considerations of composition, focusing and calculating exposure times, as well as combining the extreme ND filters with graduated filters to control exposure.
And for those of you who don't have any such filters of your own, don't worry - we will have some Lee Big and Little Stoppers on hand to lend you.

Cancellation by us
Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.
Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.
If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.
Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
