Dungeness; an adventure in dramatic seascapes
Event info
A hybrid online / on-location workshop for 6 participants led by David Rosen. Tickets will go on sale on 1 March.
In fine art photography, it is the vision, interpretation and creative expression of the photographer that defines the image. What may be viewed by the passer-by or casual snapper as an ordinary or mundane seascape can be transformed in fine art photography. Pre-envisioning, challenging compositional orthodoxy, and exploratory post-processing techniques can deliver dramatic and compelling images.
Dungeness offers a unique photography experience. Located at the most southerly point in Kent, Dungeness has an eerie end-of-world feel. It is inhabited by artisans and characterful long-time locals. Dungeness is comprised totally of shingle, littered with shipwrecks, winches and other shipping artefacts. The few houses on the Dungeness estate are either stunning architectural beach houses, derelict properties or tiny characterful artists cottages. The opportunities for fine art seascapes are plentiful. The Dungeness microclimate is constantly changing, the array of artefacts provide ideal backdrops for the desolate shingle landscape and the two lighthouses and several strange buildings provide yet more diverse subjects.
Included in the workshop will be details of Pett Level Beach, a nearby rockface and deserted end of beach location ideal for classic seascape and long-exposure photography.
David has extensive experience in shooting fine art seascapes both in the UK and Iceland. In particular minimalist, long exposure and monochrome. David has held a number of technical learning and online location workshops for the RPS. This workshop program is a hybrid event covering both technical skill development and location shooting expertise within the workshop program.
The course has been designed as a blended learning experience offering an overview of the key aspects of fine art long exposure and high and low key monochrome both at the in-camera and post-processing stages. Dungeness shooting locations and shooting tips will then be discussed and shared.
Participants then have the opportunity over the following five weeks to visit Dungeness at their convenience. We will then re-convene over two days to examine and discuss the images presented by each of the members. Individuals will be encouraged to experiment with various long exposure techniques and to create both high and low key fine art images from your respective trips. Workshop leader evaluation of the images, group discussion, technical advice and feedback will be covered.
Workshop outline
Session 1: After a short introduction to pre-envisioning, the fundamentals of long exposure as it pertains to fine art photography will be explained. This will cover equipment, the creative use of different exposures, the influence of weather on long exposure images and post-processing enhancement of long exposure images.
Session 2: Capturing and processing high and low key images. In-camera variables such as exposure adjustment, dynamic range of the scene, role of negative space, being brave with tonality rule breaking. Role of luminosity masking.
Session 3: Dungeness location briefing. Suggested locations and access details. Shooting suggestions and tips. Weather, time of day and tidal advice
6 week shooting window
Sessions 4 & 5: Discussion and review of participants' images. Each member will present his or her six images over the six days. A critique will be included and group discussion encouraged. The idea is to build on the experience from the shoot and encourage further experimentation and skill development.
Following the workshops, David will be available for one-to-one tuition on any aspect of fine art photography at an additional cost. Times and dates to be arranged individually.

Cancellation by us
Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.
Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.
If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.
Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
