As photographers many of us ultimately seek to create images that say something about us and reflect our view on the world. Photography is often an expression of our individuality. So why study the Masters?
Creative inspiration rarely develops in a vacuum . When asked about their source of creativity, almost every photographer famous or otherwise talks about the artists and photographers they greatly admire. They readily point out to aspects of their work that were inspired by their study of past masters and how they have held a lifelong respect for their creative output.
To create great photographs, we need to do more than simply learn the regular photographic craft skills and the accepted rules of composition. We have to begin the journey of understanding what motivates us to take photographs in the first place, what influences us to prefer one image style over another and what drives our creative choices both in the field and in our digital darkrooms. It is only by achieving this, can we start to develop a personal style .
This workshop, led by David Rosen, has been designed to help you along this journey of discovery.
Firstly the workshop will introduce you to a broad range of creative styles and sub-genres in landscape photography in order for you to orientate your own work. Secondly the workshop aims to explore with you a number of highly influential landscape photographers, their work, ethos and creative thought processes. Finally, you will be shown how to draw on the work of your favourite photographers to piece together a personal inspiration board, designed to inform you as you strive to create a consistent personal style .
This is definitely not a workshop about gear, techniques and photographic theory. It is designed to help you look more closely at the masters of landscape photography both old and new, to immerse yourself in their photographic philosophies and to begin a journey of creative self-discovery.
As part of the workshop you will be asked in advance to draw from your available sources a series of digital images from photographers you admire and have tried to emulate in the past. You will use these during the workshops to develop a creative inspiration mood board that you can share with other workshop members during the last day of the workshop.
Workshop outline
Day 1:
- Introduction on how to research and learn from other photographer’s work
- A tour of the various styles and sub-genres in landscape photography
- First of two deep dives into the work of specific photographers their creative philosophies and their work.
Day 2:
- Second of the two deep dives into landscape master photographers and their work
- A discussion on the meaning of self-expression and how to incorporate your own identity into your work. As part of this David will present his own personal expression board and show how this has been translated into elements of his own work
- Briefing on the steps involved in developing a personal inspiration mood board in preparation for day three.
Day 3 :
- Members will each be invited to present their recently prepared personal inspiration boards for group discussion
- Review and summary, questions and close

Cancellation by You
If you wish to cancel your booking PLEASE let the event leader / organiser know with as much notice as possible. If nothing else, this can avoid them delaying the start of the event while they wait for you.
If you have paid for an event, please note that this fee/ticket price is non-refundable unless we are able to sell your place to somebody else. You are welcome to sell your place yourself but, again, PLEASE notify the event leader / organiser in advance of any change.
Cancellation by us
Event leaders are asked to make plans for alternative activities or locations in the case of poor weather and, in most cases, events will proceed despite poor weather unless, in the view of the event leader, the weather will lead to unacceptable safety risks or very little chance of successful photography. It is inevitable, however, that occasionally an event will be postponed or cancelled for this or another reason beyond the RPS’s control. If an event is postponed we will transfer your booking to the rearranged event, with the option of a refund if the rescheduled date is not suitable for you.
Occasionally an event may also be cancelled owing to lack of bookings. So if you wish to attend an event, don’t leave it till the last minute to book as it may be too late.
If an event is cancelled we will give you as much notice as we are able and any payment by you to the RPS in respect of the event offered as a full refund. In the case of events cancelled because of lack of interest we will aim to give at least three weeks’ notice wherever possible.
Please note we are NOT able to refund any associated or consequential costs including but not limited to travel, accommodation, insurance premium or other costs incurred by you in order to attend the event.
