ART AND MEDICINE
by Bill Edwards
This lecture attempts to look at some of the array of Art inspired, at least in part, by Medicine and Surgery.
The proposition explored is that for centuries Medicine and Art were intimately connected and that this vital
"marriage" broke down in the mid 20th century and only in the last few years has there been any real
attempt at a rapprochement.
Amongst others, there will be examples of works by Juan de Miranda, Giacomo Ceruti, David Teniers, Jan Sanders van Hemessen, William Hogarth, James Gilray, Rembrandt, Noel Dorville, Louis-Leopold Boitty, JeanLouise Gericault, Honoré Fragonard, Vincent van Gogh, Edvard Munch, Toulouse-Lautrec, Arthur Miles,Louis
Wain, Christian Schad, Norman Rockwell, Damien Hurst, Marc Quinn, Sergi Chepik, Jose S Perez and Eleanor
