POSTPONED Chris Upton & Dave Mason Travel & Street Photograp

Event info

Chris Upton “The Way I See It”

Chris Upton last came to see us in 2016, when he spoke about his social documentary work, photographing the closure of a mine and his travel photography.

He returns in 2020 to talk about how his work has developed since, moving more into looking at the stunning natural beauty of the landscape and travel photography.

Chris is a Fuji X Photographer, having first dipped his toe into the fuji world in 2013 with the XE1 to run alongside his DSLR kit.

He will talk to us about how he uses his kit to capture the world around us, shooting across a variety of styles, capturing wide and sweeping vistas to the more intimate details of nature and cities.

In this talk he gives his advice for getting the most out of a shoot, from the initial planning to the way he uses the light and crafts his composition.

Dave Mason “Walking the Streets of England”

Dave Mason just wants people to enjoy his photographs. He spends his photographic life travelling around England talking to camera clubs and shooting street photography in as many towns and cities as he can get to.

When asked to Describe his approach to street photography Dave showed an image featuring graffiti saying, 'Something Wonderful Will Happen' and explained that the phrase accurately summed up a technique that he uses regularly. He Identifies a location, often with a promising backdrop of signage, street furniture or graffiti, and then Dave will wait for 'something to happen'.

Dave will show us examples featuring colour harmony, pattern, humour, good timing and strong narrative, all shot with his small micro four-thirds camera and will illustrate the techniques that can be used to create a successful 'street' photograph.

He is well known for his self-deprecating style of presentation belying his skill and experience, summed up when asked once to write an artist’s statement for an exhibition, and he wrote one word ‘smile’.
