London:Midweek Explorers visit Kensal Green Cemetery

Event info

DUE TO CHANGEOVER OF THE WEBSITE, PLEASE BOOK VIA E-MAIL TO THE EVENT ORGANISER

This month we will visit the Kensal area of north west London.   After our usual coffee meetup, we will briefly visit the Church of the Transfiguration on Chamberlayne Road, before heading towards Kensal Green, a mostly downhill walk.  There are many quirky shops and places to photograph (including a flower shop in an old Citroen van). The cemetery is one of the Magnificent Seven (along with Brompton and Highgate both of which we have visited), and Gothic in atmosphere.

Here is a link to the history on the website and here is a link to the Notable People who are buried there, including Sir Mark Isambard Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the mathematician Charles Babbage, and the novelists Wilkie Colline, Anthony Trollope and William Makepeace Thackeray.  Do take time to look at these documents, as they are really quite informative and interesting.

After exploring the cemetery, we exit by the Top (West) gate where we adjourn to the Masons Arms for lunch

Nearby Kensal Green station offers a way home – Bakerloo line and Overground to Euston & Watford.

If you wish to explore further in your own time, the Paddington Branch of the Grand Union Canal is the other side of the cemetery, on the way to Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill.
