Manufacturing David Poly

London:Bookworms June Meetup Virtual by Video

Event info

Being offered by Video Conference.  Booking essential.

Bookworms Meetings take place monthly, on the 3rd Wednesday of the month when a member of the Group introduces the work of a photographer of their choice.

This month David Lewis ARPS will introduce the work of renowned Canadian environmentalist photographer Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky’s beautiful and expertly crafted large-scale images portray the impact of industrial expansion on the environment, provoking questions about ethics and aesthetics. David plans to include an excerpt from Jennifer Baichwal’s haunting 2007 film of the photographer’s work in China ‘Manufactured Landscapes’, along with excerpts from interviews and examples of his images. In the second half of the meeting David hopes to facilitate a discussion on the value of this type of photography.’

POST MEETING NOTE

After this very successful evening if anyone would like to see more of Burtynsky’s work, his well-stocked website is at https://www.edwardburtynsky.com/projects/photographs and the full interview at Photo London 2018 is at https://photolondon.org/video/edward-burtynsky/. (There’s no charge but you need to register with a password.) The DVD ‘Manufactured Landscapes’ has the full Jennifer Baichwal film on Burtynsky’s China project plus several additional features including more images and a discussion between Burtynsky and Baichwal. I’d be willing to lend my copy of the DVD to anyone who attended my talk: first come, first served.
