London Naturally Explore Tower Hamlets Cemetery

The London Naturally Group presents an informal Sunday morning visit to the atmospheric Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park. We meet at Mile End Tube Station which is a short walk from the Cemetery. After exploring the Cemetery we’ll walk back to the tube station via a green corridor that links the Cemetery to Mile End Park.

Tower Hamlets Cemetery opened in 1841 and is one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries built in a ring around London at this time (the most famous of these is probably Highgate). The Cemetery closed for burials in 1966 and was re-designated as a park.  It’s now a designated Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation, managed by the Friends of Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park.

The site comprises 31 acres of beautiful atmospheric woodland which supports a wide variety of trees, plants, birds and insects.  We’ll spend about two hours exploring and photographing the Cemetery. The main paths through the cemetery are smooth and level but some of the smaller paths are unsurfaced and can be muddy. There is limited cover from the elements. Please dress appropriately with sturdy footwear and a drink to keep you hydrated.

Following the walk there will be an optional pub lunch (at your own expense!)
