Landscapes and Lightroom - from import to export

This online interactive programme of modules is targeted at an Improver – someone who uses Lightroom Classic CC as a basic tool, is familiar with the Lightroom workspace and knows the difference between Library and Develop and now would like to progress towards working with some of the extra creative capabilities and would like to exploit the many capabilities for non-destructive editing that it offers

The programme is comprised of 4 modules, each module, although self-contained and delivered through three 75-minute online workshops, builds on the experience of the previous one. Each module is accompanied by sample images for the workshops and relevant documentation describing the tools used to get to the final picture

As a Landscape photographer the discussions and demos are all focussed on land and seascapes from the Lightroom Classic “Beyond the Basics” Face to Face workshop adapted for online delivery. However, the skills and topics are relevant and transferable to all genres of photography.

The demonstrations are focussed on the subscription based Adobe Lightroom Classic CC, although most techniques equally apply to standalone Lightroom 6.

The first module is preceded by an additional optional “Setup” workshop to ensure everybody can connect into and use the Zoom videoconferencing tool, and that they have successfully downloaded the preparatory material.

Modules are run over a week and follow each other in sequence every three weeks.

Landscapes and Lightroom  -  Modular approach

Each Module in the series is structured in the same way and run as three, 75 minute  workshops over a week as follows:

Workshop 1 runs on a Sunday starting at 10.00

Workshop 2 runs on a Tuesday starting at 10.00

Workshop 3 runs on a Thursday starting at 10.00

Materials and Zoom invitations are sent out prior to each Module to enable participants to load and review the contents.

Module 1 - Getting up to speed with Lightroom Classic CC

This module starts by discussing the different catalogue and Library options and which ones to choose for best effect in your situation. Import options and how they differ in their effect are discussed in workshop 2 before getting on to associated image storage and keyword approaches to ensure you can retrieve your images when you want them. Workshop 3 focusses on methods for ranking your images and, for the best ones, how to perform basic image setup including setting the horizon, removing dust spots and cropping.

Getting up to speed with Lightroom Classic CC  comes with a sample import set of 45 images and Key Notes material to enable you to practice in your own time at your own pace.

This Module also includes an optional “Getting set up for on-line training” workshop run just before the main workshop set

Module 2 Luminosity and Colour

This module covers global changes to be made to images in Lightroom Classic CC through the Develop function. Workshop 1 focusses on tuning the luminosity or brightness of the image as seen through the histogram to meet the artistic vision of the photographer, extracting as much of the tonal information from the image as is possible.

Colour temperature is discussed in Workshop 2 along with the interpretation of the colour information in the histogram as is using the colour pipette to determine a representative White Balance and how to adjust the sliders to achieve the perfect balance.

Workshop 3 focusses on monochrome conversions and how to adjust the tonal information represented by colour in the B&W conversion mechanisms offered by Lightroom. From there we go on to conclude by looking at tinted images, whether using the Split Toning or Graduated Filter

This module comes with appropriate sample images for each workshop concerned along with Key Notes material to enable you to practice in your own time at your own pace

Module 3 Altering an image selectively

Having achieved a reasonable global tonal and colour balance this module goes on to examine the various capabilities Lightroom offers to allow changes to be made increasingly selectively, from Graduated Filter, through Radial Filter before finishing with the adjustment brush. The various adjustment options are discussed along with their impact on the final image, along with mechanisms introduced in Lightroom Classic CC to tune these selections either by tone or by colour, thereby increasing the flexibility of this approach.

An important part of this module is a review of the various sharpening options addressing the different stages of image development, from input sharpening through selective sharpening in the Develop module before finishing with output sharpening whether through Export or Print functionality.

The Module comes with sample images to try out the different filtering options with Key Notes material to enable you to practice in your own time at your own pace.

Module 4 Exporting and Printing Images

With images being used in so many different contexts workshop 1 discusses the creation and usage of virtual copies and collections. The special Book collection is also discussed and a brief overview of the book module given as it may require additional image adjustments to ensure the best book presentation. Finally this workshop discusses when and how to bring images into Photoshop and why that may be the best option for any particular image.

Workshop 2 goes into the various options offered by the Export module from simple exports to hard disk for digital image competitions through to watermarking and use of images in social media environments.

The final workshop of the series covers the print capability of Lightroom Classic CC including sizing, soft proofing and the print dialogue with its various options, including the sourcing and loading of paper profiles and sharpening.

This Module comes with Key Notes and suitable images to enable you to practice in your own time at your own pace and should enable you to test some of the programme’s ideas out on your own images.
