Travel Image of the Month - June 2021
Our judge for this month, Richard Lewis ARPS commented,
Another fine crop of entries – both in quantity and quality. As usual, there are several strong contenders for the top spot, but after thorough review of all of them the winner was clear to me. By way of an observation, it would be good if all images included their location within their titles.
WINNER: A Norwegian Summer, Lofoten - Dan Bronish
A satisfying composition that captures its location within its elements – the stark rocky mountain, the forested shores with colourful buildings in typical Nordic architecture, the waterside and the golden timbered boat in the foreground to give depth and interest. It paints a complete picture of its place.
Poster & Tourist Bus NY : Jay Charnock
The location is clear – very NY. It's in your face. The minimal colour palette – white/red/black provide a simple stark image, and the timing was just right as the passenger hasn't yet covered that lower bull's eye, yet all the bus passengers are well balanced across the width of the image, and provide a sense of travel as they look around at the sights.
NY Subway : Steve Jones
Sense of place – again very evident with the Stars and Stripes reflected and the implied hustle and bustle of the moving subway train. Timing is good in this one also, with the traveller caught through the window. Something about the colour of the ambient light that exudes subway. All combine to give a strong sense of travel.
The Icy Mermaid : Gabriele Dellanave
This is fun – we can see exactly where the title comes from and it's captured from exactly the right camera position. Its location is also very clear, with the mother ship in the background, not your typical cruise ship.
To the Lighthouse, Londrangar, Iceland : Sue Hutton
This goes beyond a landscape to portraying the bleakness of the location, and enters the realm of travel. Well composed with its strong converging roadside edges, the silhouette of the lighthouse and the storm clods a gathering. Very atmospheric.
• Congratulations to Dan, his winning shot will be added to the Travel Image of the Month page on the website, with the overall monthly winners competing to be the Group’s best travel photograph of the year.
