Travel Image of the Month - September 2021 :
Ibra Horse Race, Sanjoy Sengupta

Our judge for this month, Richard Lewis ARPS commented;

Winning image : Ibra Horse Race - Sanjoy Sengupta
A simple image, but very effective. It is well composed and framed. The juxtaposition of the child with the two drums in the foreground is reinforced by the line of horsemen in the background, all positioned very effectively on the sand track below. Together, these elements all combine to exude that sense of place.

Three Highly Commended Images

The Big Match - Neil Harris
This is a strong image that not only has a sense of place, but also tells a story. It's well suited to its portrait format which emphasises its impact as does the light blue boat in the foreground. The lighter patch of sands in the lower section is effective in showing the tourists and contrasts with the river and greenery disappearing into the misty mountains behind.

Early Morning in the Rice Fields, Vietnam - Stu Thompson
Again a strong sense of place - a stunning landscape in early morning light that benefits from the addition of animal and human activity. The backdrop of misty mountains contrasts nicely with the strongly coloured foreground.

Concentration, Chiang Mai - Liz Bugg
Quite a simple image focussed, literally and figuratively, on the subject child concentrating very hard on his task, while the people in the background build its sense of place. The flames lift an otherwise subdued moment and the whole combine into a very satisfactory image.

Albulatal - Phillip Walton
The location is very clear. A very pleasing Alpine landscape with the clear mountain water running into the foreground from below the high bridge or viaduct, the sense of place is emphasised by the trees and high raising ground beside the river. Icing on the cake would have been a train on the bridge!

• Congratulations then to Sanjoy, his winning shot will be added to the Travel Image of the Month page on the website, with the overall monthly winners competing to be the Group’s best travel photograph of the year.
