Looking Up

Dave Balcombe ARPS

"The image that started me off on my ARPS journey is the one above from the roof of Newcastle railway station.  I stepped off the train, looked up and loved the curved roof.   In post processing I had to crop out the roof of a train in the foreground and then had the idea to flip and mirror the image creating an interesting pattern picture.  I made a few more similar images and the informal feedback I received was encouraging so at every opportunity I photographed roofs and ceilings, creating new patterns."

"After my Advisory Day I reprinted all the images larger, this is contrary to the normal advice but it allowed me to show more detail as I had plenty of pixels to play with.  I changed from a 3/5/7 layout to a 5/5/5 which better suited the panel."

"My advice is to pay great attention to print quality and go to several Advisory Days, even as an observer you will learn a lot."

Hanging Plan

Statement of Intent

Too often people walk around looking down at their phones and fail to look up and appreciate the architecture above. Inspired by the curved roof of Newcastle Station (image 4) I have created extended geometrical patterns of many roofs and ceilings ranging from old cathedrals through Victorian stations to modern architecture to emphasise the complex and intricate patterns above us. The intention is to inspire others to look up and appreciate a different view of our buildings.
