Landscape Group Chair Chat - July 2024

While summer is probably the least favourite season for landscape photographers, the Landscape Group Committee has been as busy as ever.

Welcome to July’s Chair Chat. We are now officially in summer, although the weather hasn’t always suggested that. While summer is probably everyone’s least favourite season for landscape photography, the Landscape Group Committee has been as busy as ever. In particular, I’m delighted to share news and updates on our projects.

We had a tremendous response to the Shipping Forecast project with a great range of images from across the various sea areas. Our judging panel have now selected their favourite images and I’m delighted to say that the Shipping Forecast gallery is now available for viewing online.

Congratulations to all who had images selected and many thanks again to our panel of judges: Richard Ellis ARPS, Viv Cotton ARPS and Fiona McCowan FRPS.

Postcards from Home was a project involving participants creating postcards at locations five miles from home. Those of you who participated in the Postcards from Home project should now have received a copy of the book. The postcards gallery is available here

Our first-ever Calendar project has just closed for submissions. Thanks to everyone who participated. Judging is taking place in July, and we will have more news about the winning submissions soon. We still plan to have the calendar available for purchase in good time for Christmas. We’ll keep you updated on this. The project page is here.

Sound-Scapes is a collaborative project run jointly by the Landscape and Audio-Visual groups. The aim is for participants to produce audio-visual (AV) presentations as a means of showcasing landscape photography and to explore AV as a method of showing photographs in an engaging and meaningful way. Sound-Scapes held a practical workshop recently. More details on the project are here.

Looking forward, we’re excited to have a talk by Colin Prior lined up for 3rd September. Colin will be discussing ways in which you can develop your own photographic style and build on what you already know. Colin will also discuss the sources of his own inspiration. You can book for Colin’s talk here.

The Talk-Walk-Talk series has been very successful with participants from across the UK and further afield. Previously we’ve had themes on Coastal and Architecture & Built Environment. We’re delighted that the next Talk-Walk-Talk theme is Woodland. Booking opens on 19th August and the introductory talk by Paul Mitchell is on 23rd September. More details are here: https://talkwalktalk.org/

Incidentally, 19th August is World Photography Day, and we hope to have more news about that soon.

Member-led events continue to prove very popular so please check what’s available near you.

Finally, a reminder that early bird tickets for our 2025 Conference are on sale and are available here. Early bird discounts are available until 31st August 2024.

Until next time…

Colin
